January was as hot and dry as expected. The river slowed to a trickle and most plants wilted and drooped. The trees have provided a welcome canopy of shade and respite from the heat. The Brillantaisia continue to thrust their purple spires upward and appear untouched by the heat. The ULRG enjoyed an influx of visitors over the festive season and many picnics were celebrated. Our head gardener took a much-needed holiday break and returned fresh and ready to tidy up dead foliage, undertake a limited planting programme and tidy up the garden overall. The area closest to the Nursery will continue to be rehabilitated by City of Cape town as they attempt to repair the erosion damage created by the winter storms.
