Elephants Alive

Spirit Wildlife Foundation (SWF) is pleased to announce and celebrate our partnership with Elephants Alive. Elephants Alive (EA) has a rich history in tracking elephants for close to 25 years. Their Tracking Project encompasses an Elephant ID Project, which started in 1996 and enables EA to identify suitable animals for collaring. EA makes use of collared elephant to map the connectivity between protected areas at a landscape scale, thereby enabling the creation of living landscapes between elephant and people. With close to 150 collared elephant, Spirit Wildlife Foundation welcomes into our family: Intwandamela (‘he who greets you with fire in his eyes); Swazi (in his first year of being collared, this tusker moved an extraordinary 4,390 km across South Africa); Trailblazer (who embarked on a journey in May 2022 from southern Mozambique, across Eswatini and north into South Africa); Lotter (a great explorer and a notorious escape artist!) and Summer (an adult cow belonging to the “Trees” herd). To date, EA studies transboundary elephants moving across South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini and ensures a deeper understanding of elephant and human interactions.
