Spirit and her calf, Muddy, maintain a low profile, staying alert and elusive (and difficult to photograph!) Muddy is approaching three months old, and unlike the usual practice of integrating calves with the crash, Spirit keeps her at a distance. This behaviour aligns with the fact that Muddy’s father isn’t one of the dominant bulls in the area, prompting Spirit to hide and shelter her until she grows bigger and stronger. Both Spirit and Muddy are doing very well, with Rhino Monitors observing from a respectful and safe distance. They certainly keep the Rhino Monitors busy by engaging in “fitness” routines, with Muddy running laps followed by her mother and then the monitors! Regular monitoring of key behaviours through the EarthRanger app continues to provide valuable insights into their daily lives.
