Sisanda Magadlela is rooted in service, rising with purpose

When Sisanda Magadlela discusses her journey, it becomes immediately evident that she is motivated by a spirit of service and a desire to uplift others. At 29, the Bachelor of Complementary Medicine graduate and Spirit Foundation Education Programme alumnus carries not only degrees and accolades, but also a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility.

Raised by a single mother who worked for over 30 years as a domestic assistant, Sisanda reflects warmly on her upbringing. “My mom worked tirelessly to provide me with the life I now enjoy,” she says. “Her strength shaped me into the independent and strong-willed person I am today.”

In 2008, Sisanda’s academic excellence caught the attention of her mother’s employer, who introduced her to the Spirit Foundation. “She saw my potential and wanted me to have the best possible future,” Sisanda recalls. That connection would prove to be a life-changing moment. “I still remember Tess and Lynn coming to interview me at my mom’s employer’s home. We had the most beautiful conversation by the pool, and when they told me I had been awarded the scholarship, I was overwhelmed with joy. At that moment, it felt like the wall between me and my success had been broken.”

What followed was more than just financial support. “The Spirit Foundation became a second family to me,” she says. “They provided everything I needed—textbooks, school uniforms, tutoring, and encouragement. I never lacked anything.” She particularly remembers the dedicated support she received during her last three years of high school when she struggled with a subject. “They didn’t wait for me to ask; they arranged for a tutor to visit my school every week. That kind of support made me feel seen and valued.”

From leadership camps that challenged her resilience and confidence to the everyday care that helped her thrive, Sisanda believes the Spirit Foundation laid the groundwork for her success. After graduating with a BSc in Complementary Health Sciences and a degree in Naturopathy, she worked in the medical field for three years and even spent time abroad. “The [Spirit] Foundation contributed tremendously to who I am today,” she says. “They helped me access opportunities I never thought possible.”

As she looks to the future, Sisanda’s aspirations remain rooted in her desire to serve. “Goals change, but one constant is my passion for people. I want to affirm others’ potential. I aspire to be a voice that inspires—perhaps, one day, as a motivational speaker.”

To future Spirit Foundation scholars, Sisanda shares heartfelt advice: “Work hard, stay focused, and always be grateful. Use everything you are given to build the life you dream of. Most importantly – have fun and be yourself. The Foundation sees and supports you for who you truly are.”
