Just over a month ago, on 1 May, Sisanda Magadlela walked into the Spirit Foundation offices as a newly appointed staff member. It was not just the start of a new job, but a full circle moment as she closed a powerful loop in her life story. Once a bright-eyed high school learner supported through a Spirit Foundation Education programme scholarship, Sisanda has now returned to the organisation that helped her, only this time, as a team member committed to helping others realise their dreams.
It is a transition she describes as a “full-circle moment”—and rightly so. As a former scholar, Sisanda experienced the life-changing impact of the Spirit Foundation first-hand. Now she is on the other side, contributing to that very mission.
“This past month has been a blend of growth and gratitude,” she said. “Professionally, I’ve stepped into a role quite different from my academic background. Personally, reconnecting with the Spirit Foundation has reignited a sense of purpose and belonging.”
“Being part of a team that uplifts and empowers others brings me a deep sense of purpose; this isn’t just a career shift. It’s the culmination of everything the Spirit Foundation invested in me, and now I get to pay it forward.”
In her current role in scholar support and administration, Sisanda handles a wide range of responsibilities, including managing scholar and parent queries, confirming scholarship placements, and ensuring documentation is in order. Each task, she explains, carries more meaning than meets the eye.
“It’s not just administrative work—it’s continuing the support I once received. Whether I’m liaising with the finance team or preparing for the day ahead, I do it to honour the legacy of the Foundation and ensure its continued relevance.”
During a recent school visit, she was moved by a group of scholars who reminded her of her journey. “I saw myself in them. Their growth, their energy, their dreams—it all felt so familiar. And it reminded me why this opportunity matters so deeply to me.”
Having walked in their shoes, Sisanda now serves as a living example of what’s possible. Her lived experience brings authenticity and, hopefully, empathy that enriches every interaction.
“I understand what it feels like to be on the receiving end of this kind of support. I hope my story can help current scholars believe in their potential—that their dreams are within reach, just as mine were.”
In this new role, she will be allowed to serve others in the very way she had long envisioned: through action, care, and commitment.
“I’ve always wanted to inspire others and be of service, especially to the youth. In this role, I do that every day. By managing scholarship applications, supporting our team, and ensuring learners are well cared for, I am part of something greater than myself. That, to me, is purpose in action.”
“Embrace the opportunities. Stay committed. And one day, when you’re ready, give back in your way. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do.”
