Scholar Orientation Picnic

27 November 2020

The Spirit Education Foundation is delighted to award high school scholarships to 15 bright and worthy young scholars entering Grade 8 in 2021. On Saturday 14 November we enjoyed a wonderful morning together with these scholars, who each brought along a parent, for an official welcome and orientation around what their Spirit Education Foundation scholarship entails. After the formalities, we enjoyed a lovely riverbank walk along the Alphen Trail, getting to know the scholars and their parents a little better. Joining us on our walk were a few of our existing Spirit Education Foundation scholars from older grades, invited as mentors and “big brothers and sisters” for the younger scholars. The grade 7 scholars were able to chat to them and ask any questions about the high school they will be going to, which was greatly appreciated. Once we reached our picnic spot, scholars each found a quiet spot and spent some time writing a letter from their future 18-year-old selves, to their current 13-year old selves, imagining they were reflecting on the five years of their high school journey. The letters were sealed in envelopes which we will keep safely and return to them at their Matric end of year function in 2025. We anticipate many giggles on that day and wonder how expectation will meet reality! We know that the road ahead is not always going to be smooth but see the enormous value and potential in each of these amazing young scholars, and that with the guidance, input and support of their families, their schools and the Spirit Education Foundation, will make it through the highs and lows of high school and their teenage years, emerging as strong and resilient future leaders.

Our congratulations to these fine young scholars, and we can’t wait for the journey ahead!
