For Spirit Foundation alumna Amo, graduating from the University of Cape Town with a BSc in Biochemistry and Human Anatomy and Physiology was not just a milestone; it was a hard-fought victory.
Long hours, high expectations, and a host of challenges marked her academic journey. “The journey was very challenging, with sleepless nights and difficult courses,” Amo recalls. “Just when you think you’ve aced the exam, the results come and don’t correlate to your effort.”
Like many students, she found herself under constant pressure to perform, but she did not walk that path alone. “I met many friends who helped me ease up with the content. They shared study material, helped me understand difficult topics, and made sure we planned our weekends to refresh.”
That balance between focus and rest, between studying and community, became a critical coping strategy. Even with strong friendships, she had to navigate the constant challenge of keeping everything in balance.
“They helped me to overcome the numerous challenges that kept creeping up on me. I constantly had to balance school and friends,” she says. “That in itself was of lesson.”
In the end, perseverance paid off. Amo graduated in 2025 and returned home with a degree that represents much more than academic knowledge. It stands as a symbol of strength, community, and persistence.
