Spirit stands as a true testament to the success of the rewilding program. Due to Spirit’s intensive rehabilitation needs, she received extended support from caregivers. However, Spirit has demonstrated that, despite forming a strong bond with her care team early on, successful rewilding is achievable through a rigorous rewilding program.
Now remarkably elusive and cautious of human interaction, Rhino Monitors protecting Spirit and Muddy must maintain a respectful distance to prevent them from fleeing into the bush. We were fortunate to join the Rhino Monitors in the field and capture a quick photo before Spirit, ever vigilant, turned around and disappeared with Muddy. Observe Spirit’s body language and how she positions herself to keep Muddy behind her, it is evident that she has embraced her role as a great and protective mother.
