Rhino calves typically do not begin eating solids until they are around 3 months old. However, as early as 3 weeks of age, they start exploring the world using their mouths. They will lick or mouth various objects like rocks, long grass shoots, their mother’s legs, dung, and sticks. This behaviour helps them strengthen and develop the dexterity of their lips, preparing their digestive systems for solid food. Rainbow has already started picking up long strands of teff. Although she isn’t eating it yet, she is mimicking her mom and learning how to handle and manipulate the grass.
