In a small farming town nestled in the Boland region, the Bonnievale Blue Birds rugby club is building on its rich legacy, with new jerseys, fresh equipment, and a growing sense of belief. For the first time in over eight decades, the club has been able to outfit three full teams in brand-new kits, made possible through a partnership with the Spirit Foundation.
“This is the first time we haven’t had to hand down old jerseys,” says Russel Sampson, the club chairperson. “It’s more than just a new jersey, it’s about dignity, pride, and showing our players that they matter.”
The Spirit Foundation’s support has also enabled the club to purchase crucial training gear, such as tackle bags and shields, and improve administrative accountability. This has helped the club to subsidise transport for unemployed players, a critical barrier in amateur sport, especially in rural areas.
“Now, when our boys travel to play, they arrive as a team — equipped, prepared, and proud to wear the Spirit logo.”
While the season has had its challenges, with inconsistent player availability due to work commitments, there have also been memorable moments, including standout victories against the two top Boland Rugby clubs. Victories against Robertson, the Boland Grootuitdaag champions, and Worcester Villagers, who came up short against Robertson in the 2024 final.
The emergence of young talent has been particularly promising, with a schoolboy recently making his first-team debut.
“Development takes time. But we’re already seeing the next generation step up. That’s how we build depth. That’s how we grow.”
Behind the scenes, the club has embraced stronger governance and a more accountable administration, inspired by the values of its Spirit Foundation partner. There is now a deliberate effort to ensure the club is sustainable, competitive, and positioned to expand an authentic community impact, well beyond the pitch.
“Our players are extremely proud to be associated with the Spirit Foundation. We want Blue Birds to be a second home, a space where players can belong, develop, and succeed.”
“We’ll come back next season bigger, better, and much better prepared, all thanks to the investment Spirit Foundation has made in us. We are forever thankful.”
